This book is based on five generations of the same family and how they have found a main crop or diversification to keep them in business, The opening chapter deals with the Second World War and memories of life in a coastal village which was sometimes under attack.

The back ground to this story of personal experience is the steady mechanization of agriculture and how it totally changed life in the villages. With only a small acreage the Simpers have had to diversify into mushroom, a second home village and shellfish all of which are recorded with humour and a real understanding of rural Suffolk.
